Rethinking Retail Operating Models

Numbers don’t lie. When we spotted the convergence of retail market factors – sales trends, store data, and changes in clients’ business performance – we knew the trajectory of change was increasing far faster than predicted. We decided to dig deeper and find out what the shift means for retail operating models.

Our online survey polled 125 leaders across the U.S. retail sector. Sixty-five percent of respondents were director level and above.

There from-the-trenches reports indicate dramatic changes in stores’ looks and purpose. As more sales move online, stores remain a focal point for operations – but they’re evolving into more experiential, hands-on environments. There’s a widespread need for the overhaul of recruitment, training and compensation, yet few indications of action. As stores capture additional customer information through IoT data and biometrics, shopper data will grow even more abundant. Optimizing the supply chain remains critical.

Stores continue to play a vital role in retail operating models. But it’s up to stores to reimagine all of stores’ tools – physical space, associates, data and the supply chain – in new ways.
