Count on the Digital ICU at Your Most Critical Hour


The Challenge

Saving lives is a serious business; there is no room for error in the intensive care unit (ICU). When a large international health network recognized this fact, it also realized that its paper-based charts and limited integration of data from various hospital information and clinical systems meant caregivers had incomplete or inaccurate data for decision-making.

The health network partnered with Cognizant to create a solution that would improve efficiencies and eliminate errors at a patient’s most critical hour—time spent in the ICU.


Our Approach

Cognizant embedded a research team in the health network’s ICU for six months to observe interactions between staff and patients. We then created a digitally connected ICU solution—a comprehensive, completely paperless, fully connected tablet- and cloud-based point-of-care solution optimized for the ICU.

The solution provides real-time and clinically guided inputs to caregivers, connecting lab, electronic medical records (EMR), radiology and devices to provide a single view of patient data at the point of care while actively monitoring more than 150 patient parameters. Automated alerts prevent oversights, and all personal mobile and wearable devices are connected.

Digitizing the health network’s many paper-driven ICU processes greatly improves efficiencies. Caregivers are more likely to follow the processes, which enhances patient outcomes. Access to the latest data—via the application, alerts and personal devices—reduces gaps of omission in patient transfers as well as errors.
