Artificial intelligence that helps automobiles fit the mood of the moment

British car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is developing a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based system that will detect the mood of a driver and automatically adjust vehicle environment to improve comfort and reduce stress.

This mood-detection system is built around a driver-facing camera and biometric sensing devices in the vehicle cabin to monitor driver signals. It alters cabin features such as heating and ventilation in response to those signals. In addition, media and ambient lighting may be adjusted to help ease the strain of tense moments on the road or help pass the time during a traffic jam.

JLR hopes to expand the system in the future with even more tailored comforts—incorporating AI to learn driver preferences and make more personalized changes, such as starting a favorite musical playlist when it detects weariness in the driver.
