Access to educational opportunity is the fundamental sustainability issue of our time.

To provide the intellectual capital that global enterprises will need tomorrow, we must increase access to educational opportunity today.

Cognizant's educational initiatives are tailored to the specific needs of our communities around the world, but the driving principle is the same: to promote learning opportunities that are widely accessible, stimulating, enriching—and fun.

In the U.S., the main focus of our education initiatives is to expand and enhance science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. In India and several other countries, we work to ease disparities in educational opportunities for girls, rural populations and the economically disadvantaged.

Our efforts in the U.S. are embodied in the Making the Future program, which sparks young people's interest in STEM disciplines by creating fun, hands-on learning opportunities through after-school and summer programs, nonprofit partnerships and college scholarships. We also are a founding member of US2020, an effort to mobilize one million STEM mentors annually by 2020. In India, we have set an ambitious goal for the next 5 years called 1004, which aims to help 100 schools achieve a 100% pass rate, 100% graduation rate and 100% employability among their graduates.

Through our Outreach program, associates are also channeling their talents and energy into education—volunteering their time to enhance educational opportunities around the world, with Cognizant's financial and administrative support.

In 2013, 57,000 associates devoted some 300,000 hours to Outreach activities such as mentoring, career counseling and talent development or made personal financial contributions to supply notebooks to students, sponsor college education, provide disaster relief, etc. Today, Outreach Councils are operating in India, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia, Hungary, Netherlands, U.K. and North America.

Additionally, Cognizant Foundation has funded 18 education projects, including scholarships for economically disadvantaged students in engineering, improved access to teachers for under‑resourced government schools and vocational training for the differently abled, plus 14 healthcare projects.

Why Invest in Making? Promising Evidence of Influence

The Research Group at the University of California at Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science partnered with Cognizant to document the rationale and influence of their Making the Future (MTF) initiative. These efforts resulted in a logic model for MTF, a proposed strategy for establishing key benchmarks & targets for the initiative and some promising evidence of the influence of their investment in maker programs across the United States.

MAKING THE FUTURE

There's an education crisis in the U.S.: a relative decline in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) proficiency, fewer young people interested in STEM fields and—perhaps most alarming—a decline in measured creativity. The future competitiveness and innovative capacity of the U.S., the quality of our workforce and the prosperity of future generations are at risk.

Cognizant's Making the Future education initiative was created to unleash the passion of young people in STEM disciplines by creating fun, hands-on learning opportunities. Through financial, in-kind and volunteer support for schools and nonprofits; advocacy; college scholarships; and our flagship Making the Future After-School and Summer Program, Cognizant seeks to develop 21st century skills like creativity, innovation and collaboration that will create a brighter future for our children, preparing them to be tomorrow's leaders in our global economy.

Furthering the proud tradition of Project Outreach, Cognizant employees are volunteering to enhance education in the communities where they live and work. For more information, contact MakingtheFuture@Cognizant.com
