The U.S. Department of Labor found Cognizant's employment practices to be exemplary.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) conducted an audit of our compliance with H-1B visa laws in 2008 and 2009. After reviewing all of Cognizant’s practices from 2001 through 2008, the DOL found a greater than 99.7 percent compliance rate over the seven year period. 
As an employer that regularly brings highly skilled workers into the U.S. as part of our growing permanent U.S. workforce, we are strong advocates for constructive immigration and education policies and practices.

In 2008 and 2009, the Department of Labor (DOL) undertook an 18-month audit of Cognizant’s compliance with H-1B visa laws. Its findings were a very positive reflection on our employees’ efforts to strictly adhere to our ethics and compliance programs.

  • The DOL undertook a comprehensive examination of Cognizant’s practices from 2001 to 2008.
  • After examining 40,000 employee wage years, Labor Department officials stated that they were impressed with our compliance program.
  • The DOL investigation determined that Cognizant demonstrated extraordinarily high levels of compliance, achieving a near-perfect compliance record—above 99.7%—in our management of H-1B visa-related issues.
  • The DOL issued no fines, penalties or visa restrictions against us and did not find any willful violations of immigration rules.

In fact, the DOL praised Cognizant for "taking immediate steps to correct all identified violations and ensure future compliance," adding that our "cooperation sets a standard for others in the industry."
