A U.S.-based mutual life insurance company had difficulty adapting to the insurance sector’s constant digital transformation due to a massive, costly to maintain and hard to scale on-premises data center footprint. New application environments took up to four weeks to build, and the insurer wanted a more flexible and agile data center setup that would enable continuous delivery of software. Despite knowing that cloud migration was the best solution, the insurer was not keen to assign the responsibility of moving its core applications to inexperienced hands. Seeking a knowledgeable technology partner, the company contracted Cognizant, not only because of our cloud expertise but also due to our experience as a provider to the insurance industry.
The insurer was keen to host application workloads in locations that would best meet its business, compliance and technical requirements. It engaged Cognizant to prepare the AWS public cloud to host new and existing applications and to assist with the migration.
Our main objective was setting up a scalable IT infrastructure that would reduce the time and effort needed to deploy new environments, introduce an updated toolset for continuous integration and deployment of software engineering practices, and implement security and compliance controls. We recommended an architectural approach that included leveraging key AWS capabilities that provide elasticity and a highly available and on-demand hosting environment. This approach would also enable the implementation of infrastructure security and vulnerability management, as well as automation capabilities to reduce manual effort, human errors and time to market. Within the first 18 months of a two-year engagement Cognizant migrated over 200 applications and 2,000 virtual machines to AWS cloud. The insurer’s new environment provides high availability, disaster recovery, elasticity and self-healing capabilities. It also offers various tools that enable deployment service management, web-based version control, issue tracking, configuration management and even offer automation servers and infrastructure-as-a-code software.
The new cloud environment is helping the insurer modernize application delivery and standardize its technology offerings on a secure, fully compliant infrastructure that is also highly available, intelligent and scalable. The company has reduced application development cycles by almost 80% and saved costs by using resources during non-business hours and eliminating seldom-used application environments that can be easily re-created.
