As part of its strategy, a leading technology and home electronics company wanted to not only maintain but also grow its market position as a leader in wearable technology. The company wanted to develop a thorough understanding of both consumer and market trends while gaining expertise in artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, emerging interaction technologies, fashion and material science. It engaged Cognizant’s digital innovation, strategy and design firm Idea Couture to design forward-thinking product concepts to enhance its core product portfolio in the healthcare, fashion and entertainment sectors.
Keeping in mind the overall goal of creating product concepts that align with customer expectations, we designed concepts that fit consumer insights about the realistic limitations of today’s available technology. Based on the insights obtained through interviews and market scanning, we designed limited functionality “low-fidelity” prototypes. These prototypes were then used in our co-creation sessions with early adopters of wearable technology. These sessions helped us refine the concepts into mid-fidelity frameworks. Further collaboration with 35 sophisticated users of wearable technology enabled us to narrow down the concepts to the four top ideas. We also built working prototypes for the company’s executive team so they could test the concepts.
Our iterative approach to the design of product concepts, combined with genuine consumer and technological insights, helped drive the company’s wearables product strategy. The company selected Idea Couture for our ability to produce prototypes with the end user in mind, and we fulfilled this expectation by creating concepts that have been developed into core products for the company’s fashion, healthcare and entertainment sectors.
