AQUATEK™, a brand of Monsanto Corporation, envisioned the need for an easy-to-use digital application to help farmers monitor the health of their fields—directly from their mobile devices—allowing them to take action before there is a problem. The digital tool would track water usage and set accurate, precise irrigation plans—without having to install a costly irrigation management system.
AQUATEK approached Cognizant—based on our execution approach, design and successful track record with its parent company—to convert the company’ business vision into a digital solution.
For this engagement, Cognizant’s goal was to help farmers “listen to their fields.” Based on feedback from farmers already working with AQUATEK, our user experience (UX) designers prepared an intuitive interface that can be viewed across a wide range of devices. The solution involved satellite-linked, soil moisture probes to monitor water usage and crop health maps to monitor possible risks to crop health. The AQUATEK system uses local weather data from a third party solution to help adjust the irrigation plans. We also created an animated introductory video to describe AQUATEK’s innovative service to farmers.
AQUATEK is monitoring crop fields in several European countries, delivering alerts and emails to farmers who are using the service on smart devices of their choice.
“Listening” to the fields—a result of supplying the farmers with relevant information about crop health and efficient water use—results in improved crop yields and gives the farmers total control over their land. By capitalizing upon the improved connectivity and increased accessibility to smart devices, Cognizant and AQUATEK have brought the labor-intensive business of agriculture into the digital fold.
