Centrica on the Cloud: Control Costs, Improve Agility at Scale


The Challenge

Centrica, one of the largest utilities in the U.K., operates in an increasingly competitive and fast-moving market. To ensure its future competitiveness, the company knew it had to keep pace with the digital discord reshaping the industry. Centrica had an ambitious goal: be a digital company by 2020 and harness the potential of the cloud to revitalise its legacy IT environment. Centrica turned to Cognizant's cloud enablement experts for a solution to simplify its IT landscape.


Our Approach

With the Cirrus programme, Cognizant proposed a wholesale modernisation of Centrica’s IT estate. The project involved more than 220 business services and over eight petabytes of data, as well as migrating to a new hybrid cloud model that would give the company the business agility and efficiency it needed.

We developed a digital-ready hybrid cloud platform, deploying both public and Cognizant private clouds as a fully integrated, secure technology backbone, in 20 months. An evergreen approach keeps the platform consistently up to date with the latest versions of software and firmware. An automation layer that sits across the entire backbone provides Centrica self-service capabilities. Next-generation infrastructure and storage dramatically improve uptime and resilience, driving significant gains in the throughput and performance of business applications.

In addition, we collaborated to enhance Centrica’s capability to guard against cyberattacks and breaches that could impact the business and its customers.

Centrica can now respond faster and with greater agility to the demands of an intensely competitive market. The company can develop and launch new products faster and compete head to head with the born-digital entrants. And a robust, resilient, secure and future-proof infrastructure supports it all. The result is improved performance across multiple business applications and reduced susceptibility to cyberattacks and associated losses. Moving away from fixed costs to a consumption-based model means Centrica now has real visibility and cost control, paying only for what it uses.
