Business purpose
  • The world's leading re-insurer needed to deliver the highest quality risk assessment across its many products and services. They faced three key challenges with their leading software product: Underwriters' had minimal technical knowledge which makes writing business rules complex.
  • With sharp increases in their support activities, they needed to write and maintain business rules for most of their clients.
  • "Admin Tool" UI architecture or structure did not depict the workflow of an underwriter trying to define a business rule

Solutions
Cognizant Usability Group conducted a detailed business study to understand the significance of this application for the client's business. User analysis was conducted onsite to evaluate the design and see if the user interface was architected to support the business. Our team applied Cognizant's proprietary UI process “Pi Engineering” to redesign the "Admin Tool".

The following were key recommendations for the new prototype:
  • Design an easy to use graphical work area to draw the business rules as flowchart, business rules would no longer be coded
  • Draw flowcharts using business shapes, showing and categorizing all the support components required to
    create the business rules
  • Build UI Architecture which depicts the workflow of an underwriter defining the business rule
  • Design logical and clear organization of various support components which separates it from
    the business rules

Client Benefits

The design resulted in four key benefits:

  • Eliminated programming/syntax skills required to use this tool
  • Increased use of ease allowing underwriters to define the business rules with ease using business shapes
  • Reduced approximately 1/3 of the time by eliminating coding and avoiding syntax and validation error
  • Users were clearly able to locate their tasks with task-driven menus.
