Technology Roadmaps. Clear view ahead

In the early part of year 2001, the top management of Cognizant had a vision to build a world-class, vendor-neutral, competency group that would dispassionately review mission-critical applications and provide consulting to address Non-Functional requirements such as performance, scalability and availability. Cognizant Performance Engineering Centre of Excellence (CoE) was formed to make this vision a reality.

Performance Engineering CoE comprises a group of highly motivated, senior technology consultants whose collective experience spans across different flavors of technologies. With more than 400 projects executed successfully, many of which for Fortune 50 clients, the group has matured into offering a variety of services covering a wide spectrum of technologies.

Value Proposition:

  • Single-Point Solution: Offer an Efficient,'vendor neutral' solution to address performance, scalability, reliability and availability problems
  • Proven process framework: Utilize Proprietary and mature processes that help in structured resolution of problems
  • Experts with skills in multi-platforms: Make use of Trouble-shooting experience in a range of diverse and complex systems
  • Short lead-time: Cater to customer's requests for rescue services at very short notice
  • Cost-effective solution: Effectively leverage the onsite/offshore model and the time zone difference for providing quicker, reliable, lower cost solutions. Other vendors charge many times more for such a service

Service Offerings:

  SOS (Save Our Systems) :
The SOS (Save Our Systems) solution offering is an emergency, technical service for business-critical problems linked to performance, scalability, reliability and availability of enterprise applications. SOS engagements (typically 6-12 weeks) follow a structured process methodology to solve commonly occurring, (at the same time) disruptive performance problems in production.
PREP (Production Readiness Evaluation Practice) :
PREP acts as a 'certifying' mechanism before applications are released to production, to confirm that all potential performance, scalability and availability issues have been fully addressed. The PREP service offering is tailored on the same trusted SOS methodology and is performed on a functionally ready application before being deployed in the production environment.

Industrialization :
Industrialization service provides end-to-end technical service to customers in taking their planned e-business applications from conception to production. In other words, it is used for taking the business-vision to final delivery by ensuring that the system being developed not only meets the business requirements but also customer-specified non-functional requirements.
  Performance Assessment Consulting :
Performance Assessment Consulting focuses on reviewing the entire IT Application infrastructure of a client with an emphasis on People, Process, Tools/Technology and Infrastructure. The solution offering follows a Study-Analyze-Review-Recommend approach in solving the client's performance problems.
  MIPS Optimization :
MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) optimization service aims at optimizing the application wise MIPS usage in mainframes to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership of enterprise IT Infrastructure. Mainframe systems host huge amounts of data and a large number of business critical applications. Mainframe product vendors price their products based on overall MIPS usage. This service helps customers in reducing their cost on mainframes by providing strategies to reduce the overall MIPS usage.
  Capacity Planning :
Capacity planning is the art of sizing the system resource needs for current and future load. Capacity planning can be performed at a budgetary level before building an application, based on reference data from similar architectures. Capacity assessment/realization can be performed before a system is placed in production to ensure the adequacy of the planned capacity and make course corrections if necessary. Capacity forecasting can be done for a production application which needs to handle an increase in user or data volume in the near future. Performance Engineering CoE offers these Capacity planning and forecasting services using a proven methodology to right size the application infrastructure.
  System Monitoring Strategies :
IT systems today are increasingly heterogeneous and complex. Geographical distribution of these enterprise systems makes problem diagnosis a daunting task. Frequent downtimes and outages result in lost revenue. With an ever increasing user base and demand for availability, performance and reliability, there is a dire need to monitor and manage these systems. Performance overheads, Implementation hurdles and complexity of deep monitoring frameworks represent a haunting past. Performance Engineering CoE offers a SLIM service which provides strategies for Infrastructure, Application and SLA monitoring in an agile way to enable proactive problem determination and resolution as and when they occur.
  SOA Performance Engineering :
The SOA Performance Engineering service caters to the growing need for assessing Non-functional requirements for enterprise applications based on SOA-based architectures. With Service oriented Architecture topping the list of many a Chief Technology Officer's agenda, it is imperative that the impact of such architecture on the Performance, scalability, availability and the capacity requirements be studied in detail. The SOA Performance engineering service is geared towards preparing customers to move their applications to SOA with ease, assured by the fact that it will continue to perform and help grow their businesses.
  Benchmark services :
Benchmark services are provided in a fully equipped lab environment that is available at Cognizant on demand. The lab hosts some of the latest and most powerful server class machines in the world from vendors such as IBM, Sun and HP. It is a one stop-shop for benchmarking applications built on multi-vendor architecture and can be used to ensure application performance and stability before production.
