Client
The client is a multinational, multi-disciplined, commercial group, with interests spanning four continents. The client’s core businesses are organized into five divisions: Property, Aviation, Beverages, Trading, Industrial, and Marine Services. The client’s other areas of interest include deep-sea shipping, cold storage, and agricultural activities worldwide, in addition to businesses in the U.K., Australia, Papua New Guinea, Japan, and the U.S. The client employs more than 133,000 people.

Situation

The client’s rapid business growth put pressure on systems which were very old and resulted in a large amount of changes. The client’s group companies had numerous islands of information residing in disparate systems. Consolidation of these data pockets was a cumbersome task. The client’s customers were unable to get a uniform and consolidated snapshot of their stock and business with these companies.

Each of these companies had developed their own WMS system or used customized versions of off-the-shelf packages. These systems were on different hardware and software platforms leading to problems in integration. The client wanted to assess the feasibility of implementing an integrated, unified system that could result in lesser development and maintenance costs.

Situation
Cognizant undertook a business process study and a systems study for the client’s companies. We were chosen for our knowledge of the logistics industry and our vast experience in working with third-party logistics firms. The aim of the study was to ascertain the feasibility of implementing a unified warehouse and transportation management system. Cognizant is currently involved in designing the base system, along with the required improvements. The current process and systems will be mapped to the required base system to identify any gaps. Benefits of this solution include:
  • Unification of WMS and TMS resulting in an overall reduction in IT development and support costs
  • State-of-the-art solution that will addresses both short-term and long-term business requirements
  • Faster time-to-market through timely availability of data and visibility of corporate information
  • Improved operational efficiency
  • Better utilization of resources across the group companies
  • Business growth due to nationwide reach as opposed to a regional reach
  • Better service offerings to customers through features, such as stock visibility across different states and KPI reporting
