| The client, a leading provider of marine
support services to the offshore oil and
gas industry globally, was formed 27 years
ago. The company is headquartered in Singapore
and has a fleet of over 55 vessels working
worldwide, operating in the major oil centers
of the world, including the North Sea, Persian
Gulf, India, South Africa, West Africa,
South East Asia, Brunei, Australia, and
New Zealand. |
| |
| The client has operated very successfully
to date with its legacy, paper-based systems,
but with the expansion of the company’s
areas of operations, the arrival of higher
specification vessels, and newly available
information technology systems, combined
with an internal requirement for wider and
faster management control, it decided to
undertake a major re-engineering of its
Business Processes.
To this effect, it had to design a cost-effective,
instantly-scaleable, user-friendly fully-integrated
Operations Rationalizing Business Information
System (ORBIS), which could handle it’s
industry-specific needs, and in particular
the reporting requirements from the widely
dispersed and remote revenue units (Vessels)
back to the offices in operational control.
Optimized data transfer between the vessels
and the main offices was one of the critical
requirements of this work. |
| |
The solution focused on comprehensively
addressing all areas of vessel operations
including reporting processes (deck &
operations log, change of status etc), on-
board cash disbursement processes and handover
processes. The Technical Tracking and Reporting
included in detail, all engine room operations,
and consumables (fuels, lubes and water
reconciliation) and technical situation
reporting.
In order to develop a comprehensive solution
addressing all of the client’s business
needs, Cognizant focused on two key areas:
A strong approach to business process
mapping and requirements gathering:
Cognizant drove the process mapping and
requirements gathering initiative through
a well-developed methodology. Cognizant
also prepared a technical architecture document
outlining the High Level Application, Software,
Business Units communication Architectures
as well as the Implementation, Security
& Deployment Views of the Solution.
Thorough understanding of the
oil & gas marine support services industry:
Based on the process mapping and requirements
gathering approach already highlighted,
Cognizant gained a thorough understanding
of the various areas of vessel operations
in the oil & gas marine support services
industry. Cognizant also acquired business
knowledge of the metrics and reports that
the client generated to service requests
of some of its key Oil & Gas customers.
Cognizant used this domain understanding
to also address key aspects with respect
to integration of its custom-built components
with the functionalities of certain off-the-shelf
products (offered by specific niche product
vendors in the Oil & Gas Support Services
Industry) that the client was using for
some of the above modules, in order to ensure
a smooth, seamless and comprehensively
integrated solution.
Technologies which were used for the engagement
were:
- Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
- Visual C#
- MS SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
- Microsoft Windows 2003 Server
- Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
- Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)
2.7
- Visio 2000, ERWIN
|
| |
- A Complete Rationalized and automated
solution for the client
- A custom built application that had
all the features the client was looking
for and saved the client expensive multi-vendor
product licensing and integration cost.
