Memoirs of my campus days!

T. SRIDHAR
Chief People Officer,
From GCT Coimbatore & IIT, Madras
Now @ Cognizant

Life during the initial years of education is all about working hard and watching a veritable world of immense possibilities open up before you. When I look back, a string of events flowed through my life that made me aware of turns that life can take. It gave me the strength to evolve into the person I am today.

I was (and still am!) fascinated by things moving, and electronics. Not surprisingly then, I chose mechanical engineering, which worked well for me! The four years spent at college revolved around nothing else but studies. And I must confess, I would still propagate that as the best way to go through college. Of course, I had my share of indulging in cricket and in lots of fun!

Not surprisingly then, I stood second in the university–back then all colleges fell under the Madras University banner. I was a little disappointed at missing the first rank by a mere six marks! Clutching these accolades under my arms, I attended my first campus recruitment and was placed at Ashok Leyland.

However, academic pursuits don't stop with a mere undergraduate degree and I went on to take the GATE examination. On the morning of the examination, I vividly recall having to attend a general paper, and wasn't sure if it would make sense to complete the other papers that afternoon! Out of the five who attended, only two of us stayed back; the rest simply left for an afternoon movie! Imagine my surprise then, to note that I scored much above the cut-off score (above 90%) in the GATE examination. Well, the next step, naturally, was IIT.

You would agree that this is certainly a very tough course, but I topped it and was awarded the medal–a sweet victory for having missed the first rank in my undergraduate degree! To add to my delight, at the convocation ceremony, the German Council General of Delhi who distributed the awards, invited me to Germany and even promised full financial aid! I still consider that to be one of the proudest moments for me and for my parents, who attended the ceremony. However, although I was inclined to join California Tech where I was admitted for my PhD, I was unable to do so, for personal reasons.

With a master's degree and a sense of achievement, I decided to stay in India. I took up a job with a leading software company–one of the few that existed at that time.

It's been an exciting twenty years in IT, although I do feel sad sometimes that I have not been able to do justice to my fundamental engineering course. However, the length and breadth of my diversification doesn't end there! I was a techie in the project management track and moved into Banking and Insurance space. After 15 years in this industry, I went on to lead the Insurance and Healthcare practices for Cognizant. After having managed business for many years at Cognizant, I moved on to managing people in my role as the Chief People Officer–a global responsibility! As they say, the learning never stops!

Today if I were to look back at the journey of my education and my professional experience in the world of IT, I realize that life is a lot more fun and enriching when you have a goal in mind, and don't mind traversing the road less travelled. I have also learnt that it pays to be open and not be fixated with just technology. After all, it was not an easy journey for me–studies until 2:00 am in the morning, midnight teas at our local tea stall, rushing back to the library for more studies. And when I went home with the savings of my stipend from post graduation–my first salary before work–boy, did it feel really good!

If there is one thing I regret, it is that I am not in touch with my alumni–being global citizens, keeping in touch has been tough! Nonetheless, it has been an exciting journey for me!

To all you enthusiastic aspirants–stay simple, stay focused, keep an open mind and you will emerge with confidence!

TransITion 08 @ Chennai

The Master of Ceremony announced that Kannappan and Arvind M of Sri Sai Ram Engineering College had won the Technical Paper presentation contest and the two students literally choked on their words, out of sheer delight!

The next announcement was about the winners of the 'Robotics' contest. And ….three women from Meenakshi Sunderarajan Engineering College, Chennai literally jumped out of their seats, pumping their fist in the air. Nalini Priya,     M. Dharsini and R. Venkatalakshmi, did a little jig on their way to the dais to pick up the prize.

Such strong emotions were on display for a similar reason: The top prize was a 'Job offer' at Cognizant. Now you would agree that those emotions were not amiss!

TransITion 08, Chennai, a massive tech forum for pre-final year engineering students, which attracted over 35 colleges and an unprecedented 1,300 students, was a fresh and different experience for students, placement officers and heads of engineering colleges in and around Chennai.

The power-packed day had a lot of powerful presentations, speeches and interactions. Leading the presenters was Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice Chairman, Cognizant and Chairman, NASSCOM, who moderated an animated discussion on how entrepreneurship and innovation could be brought into the engineering curriculum.

The panel included Anna University Vice Chancellor Dr. D. Viswanathan, leading industrialist Gopal Srinivasan (of TVS Electronics), besides two young entrepreneurs, Murugavel Janakiraman (CEO, Bharat Matrimony.com)  and Sarathbabu (CEO, Food King Caterers).

The most participated event was the “Ultimate Techie” which tested students on their basics across multiple engineering disciplines. Based on their performance in the objective-type first round, 18 students were shortlisted for the second round which was more of a descriptive type, again testing them on advanced concepts across disciplines.

More than 700 young men and women took the test and after the final round, D. Karthikeyan of SRM University stood first. Of course he bagged the Cognizant job offer! V.C. Sengamalam of Prince Shri Venkateswara Padmavathy College of Engineering was the runner-up for the event.

For its sheer ups and downs and the breadth of knowledge tested, the Quiz conducted by Giri Balasubramanian was a rocker. The audience sat with rapt attention as the questions tested the nerves, knowledge and quick thinking of the six teams on stage, selected from over 70 teams that participated. Finally, the professional skills of Sri Venkateswara's College of Engineering team (Ranjani & Ramkumar) prevailed, leading others by miles.

TransITion 08-Chennai proved a tremendous success for the organizers and the students. Many of the students walked up to Cognizant's HR campus team to thank…and of course, to demand more of the same!

When the maiden TransITion in Chennai has been such a success, students can expect encore after encore…isn’t it? Next destination for TransITion: Coimbatore!

Rahul dances his way into the audience’s hearts!

Mesmerizing! The one word that finely captures his dance recital! Rahul Maheshwari left everyone spellbound and elicited a standing ovation at Josh 2007 with his excellent Kathak recital. He was indeed a true discovery at Cognizant-Bangalore’s annual talent show with his graceful movements and captivating expressions.
An alumnus of RV College of Engineering, Bangalore, Rahul joined Cognizant in July 2007 and is currently a Programmer Analyst Trainee in the Datawarehousing practice. “I was quite excited that in 5 months of joining Cognizant, I would be given an opportunity to exhibit my talent!”, he gushed. At Josh, Rahul choreographed most of the dance shows by the associates, training the participants for weeks on end, and still practising for his own fabulous solo performance, that truly captured the audience’s hearts.

Watch him dance and you would definitely believe that he is a trained professional dancer. But Rahul says, “please believe me when I say that I am a self-trained dancer, and have picked up the steps and nuances of classical and Haryana folk dance by watching all the dance programs on TV from a very young age!” Awesome! Unfortunately, his parents were of the opinon that training in dance would merely distract him from his academics. However, his teachers in school encouraged him to participate in various dance competitions and Rahul gracefully danced his way to several prizes! His talent was unstoppable, for while at school, Rahul even conducted dance classes for the kids in his neighbourhood and his seniors. Naturally, he took part in inter-collegiate fests and won many more laurels for himself.
Rahul does sometimes regret not being trained formally in dance, but is happy that he is able to find time to revel in his passion either through stage shows in the city or through events such as Josh at Cognizant!

Re-live those years

All of us retain a child in us, which yearns to simply have fun! Wouldn't it be great to go back in time and go 'Back to School'?

Back to School or 'BTS' offers associates a chance to relive those years at Cognizant Hyderabad!

Every team is built on strong bonds and these are made stronger when we play together, win together and gracefully accept defeat…together. Associates bonding under an umbrella of fun–this was the core idea behind BTS when it was created in 2005.

Disguised as The Black Stallions, Blue Sharks, Golden Eagles and Red Dragons, the associates battle it out at various events to eventually win the BTS Annual trophy!

All these activities have provided a great deal of entertainment without wavering from its primary focus - giving associates a sense of belonging to the universal clan of Cognizant. Other offshoots of BTS that serve this cause are–Hangout, Catalyst and the exclusive BTS people magazine, Rough Notes.

Hangout with its tagline 'Live Life,' is about hanging out with office buddies outside campus. An open-to-all-dutch-social-networking club, it brings people of similar interests closer. Recent hangouts include movie trips, go-karting and picnics.

Catalyst is a meticulously planned theatre-based approach to team building. The program administered by BTS personnel, is a full day workshop that brings out theatrical and unexplored team skills of the associates while it inculcates the attributes governing team dynamics.

“BTS is the best thing that has ever happened to Cognizant Hyderabad. It has infused fresh energy into the associates, made them bond together with their colleagues from other locations, projects or practices. It taps into their creative potential and helps them explore their artistic, cultural, sporty sides. It is the perfect stress buster. I do wish that managers participate more in the BTS events” says Satish Jeyaraman, Senior Manager, HR.

No wonder BTS has graduated into a unique practice. Having diversified into a variety of team-building activities BTS could be re-christened TBS (Team Building Solutions)!

Sustaining such an initiative is difficult. As the challenge became steeper, the team plunged deeper. “As the organization grew, it became a challenge to conduct events that reach out to associates across locations with regularity. We now have a structured BTS working committee consisting of individuals from across projects and accounts who joined through a unique BTS recruitment drive. These associates go above and beyond their project work and contribute to BTS.” says Mani Kandan who pioneered the idea.

The success of BTS has resonated across Cognizant. Variations of BTS are now being kicked off at other locations. More, is fun!

Josh at Cognizant Bangalore!

The golden ball sank into the horizon, but the spirit rose at Cognizant Bangalore. It was an evening of color, enthusiasm and vibrancy as Cognizant unveiled its stars and brilliant minds.

On December 14, Cognizant associates got together at the Christ College Auditorium to showcase their impressive talent and creativity at JOSH 2007.

The annual talent show of Cognizant witnessed a celebration of music, dance, drama, mimicry and fashion, and ended with a rocking performance by the in-house music band - Waves. The participants treated the associates to some brilliant performances that won a thunderous round of applause and cheering from the audience. The Master of Ceremonies for the event was Mark Rego, who, in his trademark informal style, got the crowd into the groove.

“As another year of hard work, tough challenges and memorable winning moments comes to an end, it is time for us to shed our inhibitions and unwind,” said A N Rao, Vice President, ITIS Practice, in his inaugural address. He highlighted, “This is the one of the best platforms for our associates to explore and exhibit their talents outside of work and enjoy an evening by dancing, crooning, applauding and celebrating together the Spirit of Josh.”

The show got off to a foot-tapping start with an enthralling ‘Era Dance’ that captured the charming grace of yesteryear beauties as well as the fiery glamour of today’s svelte stars. It was Bollywood heroines personified, in all glory! Bollywood inspiration not sufficing, a mesmerizing Kathak recital by Rahul Maheshwari won the hearts of the audience who gave him a standing ovation.

Enough of dancing to your Managers’ tunes! It’s time they danced to your tunes! So Josh 2007 came up with Nach Baliye, a dance contest exclusively for managers. The managers, along with their dance partners, stole the hearts of the audience with their energetic performance. The audience finally voted for the best pair.
It is often said, “If you can’t beat them, join them”. Synching with the zestful dance beat, a fashion show which set heartbeats racing was also centre-staged. What better occasion to flaunt grand bridal outfits!? Cognizant models scorched the ramp with their stately walk and enchanting smiles. But unlike usual Pageants, there was a uniqueness in this. It was beauty with a purpose. For the second round saw some of our associates walk the ramp with a mini zoo on their heads! Parrots, eagles, butterflies, bats, sparrows and ducks perched on the models’ heads highlighted the pressing concerns of environment and wildlife!

After the ‘walk’ for significant environmental concerns, our associates chose to ‘voice’ out certain Bollywood stars. What if the stars were to take an exam at the training classrooms of Cognizant Academy? Prashanth showed the audience how, with his witty mimicry that threw the audience into fits of laughter.

The best things in life should never come to an end! So who would say no to an extra dose of laughter, the best medicine ever, whether it be in the form of a modern Ramayana in English or a humorous Kannada skit. Either way it was humor and histrionics at its best.

And finally, all of them let their hair down and shook a leg to a stellar performance by Waves. Truly an acoustic feast of popular numbers!

The fun never ends at Josh!

Pune International Marathon

As many as 800 associates from Cognizant-Pune registered for the charity run of the 22nd Pune International Marathon that was held on December 2, 2007. These included several senior directors and managers at Cognizant. Last year, around 600 Cognizant associates had participated in the charity run, making it one of the largest corporate teams at a marathon.

The young workforce at Cognizant was quite upbeat about participating in this marathon since this year, the objective was to increase awareness about HIV/AIDS. For a noble cause such as this, they were willing to spend time and energy in spreading a positive social message.
Our associates registered for the event through an NGO called the Centre for Youth Development and Activities (CYDA). The first day of registration itself saw an overwhelming 350 Cognizant associates at our Hinjewadi facility within the first four hours! So much so, the CYDA volunteers ran out of registration forms and had to organize for more!

After all, at Cognizant, our passion to make a difference is known to transcend causes and adversities! We do what we love, and love what we do!

Faculty Development Programs

When a Project Manager from the Communications practice completed his hour-long presentation on 4G mobile networks, 22 teachers from different engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu could hardly restrain their applause. Not surprising, as the lecture provided a good insight into the emerging trends in communication engineering, especially, how the proliferation of IP based platforms is likely to help mobile networks offer a plethora of new applications. The presentation was one of the three successful ‘Faculty Development Programs” which Cognizant’s campus team has rolled out in the last two months. The other two programs on – Java J2EE and Service Oriented Architecture also provided a forum for college teachers to interact with experts from Cognizant’s Global Technology Office and Academy. Interaction through these FDPs helps teachers not only update their knowledge about the latest applications and trends in computer sciences, information technology, communication and software engineering, but also helps Cognizant track the direction academia is taking and understand their needs for knowledge upgradation.

Fun and Gaiety

Cognizant Bangalore celebrates its seventh anniversary with fun and gaiety.
