F

or some people, college life can turn out to be a significant epoch in their lifetime. A tenure that can change the way one looks at the world, work with others and learn life's basic skills–beyond academics.

Just the other day, while talking to a colleague, the topic inadvertently turned to my college days. I have always looked back at those four years at the Institute of Technology–Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi as a golden period in my life. It was there that I learnt a lot about life; there that I turned from a shy introverted person, into a complete, independent adult. And it was here that my entire perception of life, that began in Nanganallur, a quiet neighborhood of Chennai, mercifully ended!

Never having traveled outside Chennai, I grew up thinking of it as my entire world! After all, it was filled with a large group of bright young people–to me, perhaps the best in the world.

I had worked really hard, pushing myself to the farthest possible limits preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination or the famed JEE. It paid off and there I was joining the counseling queue. I had convinced myself and my family that I would pursue my undergraduation program in Naval Architecture–available those days only in IIT–  Madras. But then something inside me changed and I chose instead Mechanical Engineering in     IT-BHU and there it was. I landed in a strange place where almost everyone felt the same way.

My first few weeks were a real eye-opener. I came across different sets of people with varying degrees of ability. It was then that it struck me that Chennai was not the only place with bright young boys and girls. I learnt to interact with those from different cultures, and spoke extensively with freshers on various topics. I learnt communication skills, team spirit and many more soft skills in my short four years at IT-BHU!

Today, lodged comfortably in the IT industry, I successfully deal with so many different people in Cognizant Academy, merely by the learning that I garnered from IT-BHU. I reflect on the lasting effect IT- BHU education has had on me in my 12+ years at Cognizant. It is amazing that I started off as a Project Leader, went into Business Development, played a role in the initial pursuits in acquiring third party customers, moved on to Relationship Management, returned to project delivery, owned the integration of a new Delivery Center into the system, incubated and grew a large program into one of the Strategic Accounts for Cognizant, and then finally, the current tangential role as Head of Cognizant Academy.

All this and more, I honestly feel, I owe to the wonderful learning experience called College!

Back to Campus

Abatch of 100-plus Cognizant employees, alumni of SRM University, Chennai, took a day off and met at the University campus on March 22, 2008, as part of a "Back to Campus" program organized by Cognizant in alliance with the University.

In a pioneering effort to re-establish contact with their alma mater, associates from Cognizant pledged their commitment to improve industry-academia collaboration.

Chief guest on the occasion, R Ramkumar, Director, Corporate Marketing and Communications, Cognizant elaborated, "Collaboration amongst various stakeholders is vital for the betterment of academia and the student community. Traditionally, there has been good interaction among governments, academic policy makers, educational institutions on one side and specific industry houses on the other. But the potential of a strong alumni network has not yet been successfully ventured into. If executed well, the relationship can add significant value to the alma mater."

He continued, "Through such structured forums, Cognizant plans to provide the alumni of various educational institutions, an opportunity to go back to their campuses and contribute their mite in the form of guest lectures, participation in curriculum development and subsequent teaching, in education-related CSR activities. The alumni are best positioned to make the biggest collaborative impact as they understand the cultural nuances of both the academic institution and the company, and know how best to make it work."

The Vice Chancellor of SRM University,   P.Sathyanarayanan said universities in the US laid emphasis on networking with their alumni. In fact, alumni associations were monitored directly by University presidents and Provosts, so that the strength of the old students' network can be used to improve the brand of an institution.

The University's alumni cell has been reconstituted and a senior Director now heads this cell. The University website has also been recast to inform alumni of the developments in the institution. The institution can proudly claim around 10,000 students who have graduated from SRM University and SRM Engineering college, the database of whom were being updated. Similar initiatives to welcome back the alumni and use their strengths to benefit the present crop of students were going to be prime on their mind, iterated Mr. Sathyanarayanan .

Cognizant alumni led by Senior Manager, Frank Antonysamy, emphasized their allegiance to this cause of going back to college and delivering guest lectures on technical topics and soft skills training to students once every month. Frank also reiterated that Cognizant would involve themselves in noble CSR activities under the Cognizant SRM Alumni group banner.

Music Club @ Cognizant

T

his is what a caption in one of our offices reads Let's play the sweet notes of success together. And Cognizant's Kolkata office did just that! They included music within their work space by launching a Music Club C-Sharp on Friday, February 22, 2008. The response, as expected, was tremendous! 60 associates immediately registered as members of C-Sharp.

The Music Club aims to provide a platform for musically-inclined associates to bond and share aspects of music that is close to their heart.

Says Mahua Seth, Manager-SQAG, Cognizant Kolkata, “We have been discussing Music Club for the past two years. Every year, during the auditions for Octaves (annual music concert) and the Annual Day, we noticed that a large number of associates were disappointed that they were unable to perform. In order to give them an opportunity to showcase their talent, we decided on C-Sharp.”

Members of the Club will participate in monthly programs on different aspects of music, engage in discussions and review of albums/music pieces, attend workshops by visiting artists/musicians. The Music Club aims to hold theme-based performances (February  Love, March  Color) every month. The future sounds promising for these music lovers. A blog site where they can share their passion is on the anvil.

The Club will also participate in various employee engagement activities that are held round the year at Cognizant Kolkata. This includes Octaves, Annual Day, Autumn Fest, and many others.

As they say, at Cognizant, there is always an avenue to explore your passion to make a difference!
