SHANKAR SRINIVASAN
Vice President and Head, Hyderbad,
Cognizant.

I still have vivid memories of my first days in college at BITS Pilani. A bunch of us school friends traveled for over 40 hrs from Chennai all the way to the Pilani campus. We had heard of this magnificent campus from our seniors but nothing prepared us for the campus life, that has actually made me what I am today.

We were flooded with vignettes, ranging from the ragging that toughened me, friendships that continue despite our different professions, open book tests that turned out to be more difficult than the normal ones, and choosing professors and preparing your own timetable. The more flippant slices of our life included, playing tennis ball cricket, late night chai (Indian Tea) trips and so much more. Campus life gave me the freedom and taught me to be independent, accountable and responsible for my own destiny.

Initially, I was inclined towards the hardware industry, also because, those days, a career in the hardware industry was considered glamorous. However, my final year decided my destiny. I completed my thesis on repairing and maintaining IBM plotters and this sealed my fate! It was going to be the software space for me!

After my second year at college, I worked on a summer internship at IGCAR, Kalpakkam, where I had the privilege of interacting with some brilliant scientists there. I not only learnt holography but more importantly, began to appreciate the virtues of dedication, focus and pride in one's work. I was able to bring these with me to Cognizant where I realized to my sheer delight, that this Organization shared and cherished the same core values.

Looking back, college life was an opportunity to work in a diverse environment replete with challenges. Overcoming such differences and channeling our strengths towards our goals together—this was probably my most important learning, a learning reinforced by Cognizant. Where the dictum is “Team Works”. And the tag line is a “Passion for making a difference”!

To yourself, society and the Organization.

Wishing you all the very best in your own unique journey!

Campus Intiatives

It is a summer of various hues this year. Rain and floods may still be dampening the spirit of people in several States across India. But then, there's one set of folks in Cognizant who keep the heat on Team Campus. From recruitment to building longer term relationships with education providers, the footloose crowd of Team Campus found itself to be a busybody this summer.

Conventional wisdom says campus HR is only about recruitment. Relationships between a recruiter and an educational institution begin and end with the placement office. But that's not the case at Cognizant.

As an innovator-by-instinct, Team Cognizant comes up with surprise packages that contain many goodies. Continuing this tradition, the Team Campus, even while performing its hop-stop-and-jump routine from one college or university to the other across States, evolved an idea that is fast catching up among several college managements.

While seeking the best of talent and acumen among the college students and inviting them to come aboard Cognizant, the campus team found time to chat up with the top managements of several large colleges and universities. The talks led to the Team Campus, led by Satish Jeyaraman, to begin an initiative to sign agreements with a series of colleges. Simply put, the MoUs signed with the colleges provides for a year-round platform for a healthier and more organic relationship between the two sides.

The initial flush of activity is in the southern part of the country. If you go by the ambitious plans of the campus leaders, the team would soon extend this program to other key partner institutions across the country.

The Goodies
Under the MoU, Cognizant offers awards to the Best Outgoing Student (BOS) and the Best Academic Performer in a particular recruitment year. And Cognizant does not forget the makers of good students—the teachers. The MoU also provides for a Best Faculty Award.

Cognizant, through the MoU, has agreed to sponsor workshops, symposia or cultural activities (what better way to gel with the next generation crowd than a cultural show!). Cognizant would also help the college students to know the latest trends and happenings in the industry by offering lectures on emerging technologies and business processes.

Bhaskar Das, Vice President, HR, who signed the MoU at SSN College of Engineering, Chennai, offered his insight into what the company looks and stands for. He wanted the college to give good core engineering education and engineering skills to students. “Training students to use that knowledge to run businesses is something that we can do. But we can't do basic education. It is your strength and we know you do it well and better than us.”

All in the game

Geology, software, sports...you name it and he's into it! Meet Rajarshi Chatterjee, Assistant Manager, Projects, at Cognizant. A Masters in Applied Geology, Rajarshi has worked in the insurance vertical for more than a decade and is a self-proclaimed sports addict. He has been involved with outdoor sports like football, basket ball and hockey since a student at St. Patrick's, Asansol.

RAJARSHI- Master of games

After completing his Class XII exams, Rajarshi moved to IIT Kharagpur in 1991 to study his Masters in Applied Geology, but soon moved away from studying the earth to studying computers! His love and involvement with football continued and he participated in several inter-hostel matches. He also participated in hockey and swimming competitions.

Soon after his graduation in 1996 he landed a job with Satyam Computers and re-located to Hyderabad, leading to a brief hiatus from sports.

“In those days, the industry hardly had any involvement with sports and all one could do during their free time was visit the pub or go to the movies,” he explains.

Relocating to Chicago, US in the year 2000 to work with a client in the insurance vertical, Rajarshi soon went back to his sport addiction. “Life was easier in the US. We finished work by 4 pm and were free to pursue our hobbies after office hours. Moreover, the US offered easier access to playing fields and equipment was not as expensive as in India. Also there was a driving range close to my workplace,” says Rajarshi. Although an injured shoulder kept him away from playing tennis or soccer, he enrolled for a seven-day course in golf and played regularly for two hours, after work.

“The most interesting thing about golf is that it throws challenges at you and you keep competing against yourself,” Rajarshi adds. A member of the Royal Calcutta Golf Club today, Rajarshi participated in the Merchants Cup Division, 10 July, 2007 and won the Overall Day's Best Nett in Division III. At Cognizant, his partners in golf are Sajid Hussain, Pinaki Ghosh, Indranil Chakraborty and Atanu Mukherjee.

Currently working for the Hartford project, Cognizant, he has won the 'Most Valuable Player' title at the recently held football game between the insurance projects in Kolkata. And we at Cognizant know that he will be a 'Most Valuable Associate' for us!

Hop, skip, jump!

Sangeetha's jumps
to excellence

Her passion has taken her to great heights, quite literally! An international high jump champion, Sangeetha Mohan, holds the current record in high jump at the South Asian Federation [SAF] Games 2004, Pakistan. “It was a memorable experience walking around with two security personnel by my side!” explains Sangeetha. She is today a part of Cognizant's Information, Media and Entertainment (IME) practice.

A product of College of Engineering, Anna University, Chennai, she initially tried her hand at 100m hurdles, heptathlon and high jump, finally settling for her favorite sport —high jump.

Sangeetha has to her credit, 4 international medals, 30 national medals and 200 state medals. She has also won the Bronze medal at Junior Asian Games 2004, Malaysia and two medals in hurdles and high jump at the International Indoor competition 2002, Iran. She holds the current Junior National Record for high jump at the All India Inter-University, Junior Federation, and has won many state tournaments as well. Sangeetha has also received Rotary's best Junior Citizen Award, Lion's Club Award and Chief Minister's Scholarship Award.

Training for the National games to be held in February 2008, Sangeetha is looking forward to being a part of the Cognizant athletics team in the forthcoming Corporate Olympiad.

Pulling a Spidey at Cognizant

Cognizant-Academy at Siruseri,
Chennai, has erected a wall in its
campus exclusively for rappelling!

For quite sometime, I harboured a secret fancy for rappelling, (along with a lengthy list of adventure sports like bungee jumping, white water rafting, parasailing, scuba diving). So when Cognizant-Academy announced the schedule for the rappelling sessions, it was quite obvious that yours truly was the first to register!

After a soggy (rains played spoilsport) and a depressingly endless wait, The Day finally arrived! A perfectly sunny Friday! If only I had come prepared...

Despite stares, I joined the enthusiasts in my crisp, ironed trousers, smart formal shirt and polished heels digging deep into the soggy ground. Will I be allowed to rappel? Colonel Jason assured me I would!

I simply couldn't stop grinning when I heard the adventure sports team had come prepared. That's right! They had extra pairs of shoes in different sizes! So, now I stood with a pair of shoes tucked under one arm and a declaration form in the other, waiting patiently for my turn. Given a chance along with all the safety gears, who wouldn't want to attempt a Tom Cruise MI stunt or scale the walls of Cognizant like Spidey?

I didn't have to wait too long for my turn. The rush of adrenaline when you're suspended from a single rope tied round your waist... A thrill that simply cannot be compared! WOW! An experience I would definitely recommend to all true adventure seekers! My friends had taken videos of me sliding down the walls and what fun I had showing it off afterwards. Three turns of rappelling had gone straight to my head! I felt like the best rappelling expert on the planet! What a day I had—one that I would cherish for the rest of my life!

I hope in future, there would be more such activities arranged in Cognizant. What fun it would be to go trekking in the wild and rappelling along mountain cliffs!

Thank you Cognizant, for helping me tick one item off my wish list! (I have a few more though, still waiting to be crossed out…!)

ChannelOne blogs are an ideal platform for employees to express themselves and exchange knowledge. They can build a virtual social network with our associates spread across the globe even without meeting them in person.
